GARMA FESTIVAL 4-10 Setpember 2000

Gathering of Indigenous Scholars

forumThe 2000 Garma Festival of Traditional Culture Academic Program was attended by a group of 75 Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics from universities across Australia. The Academic Program took place over 3 days - from Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th September. The program was based on workshops around the theme of the representation of Indigenous knowledge in the university sector. Another topic addressed was Indigenous health, in particular youth vulnerability.

Over three days, participants held discussions on the ideas and issues surrounding Indigenous knowledge in higher education. As part of these discussions, participants developed and agreed on a Garma Declaration, which was presented to representatives of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (AV-CC) and The Hon. Kim Beazley MP. Participants also passed and moved in principle support for the concept of Garma.
