Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take photographs at the Garma Festival?
Yes, however all guests must sign a General Authority to Make a Record of the Festival. If you have completed the online registration process, you would have agreed to this.

Is the forum at the same place as the festival?
Yes, the Forum is an integral part of the festival.

How can I learn more about Yolngu languages and culture?
Charles Darwin University, School of Australian Indigenous Knowledge Systems has a Yolgnu Languages program CDU Yolngu Studies

Do I need a Permit?
You don't need a permit. Your festival invitation grants you access to the permit area. You should read the permit restrictions before leaving for the festival.

Can you be at the forum and attend the festival?
Yes, even though the forum and the festival run concurrently, there will be festival activities that you can join.

What happens when we fly in? How do we get to the site, do we need a car?
When you arrive at Nhulunbuy (Gove) airport, a Garma bus will meet you and take you to the festival site.

Can you drive in to the Garma Festival?
Yes. Driving from Darwin takes 12 to 15 hrs in a 4-wheel drive. It would be good to tell us if you plan to drive and when you plan to arrive. You will need to bring your registration confirmation summary and tax invoice as this provides you with permission from the Northern Land Council to travel through Aboriginal land.
