The file snake, djaykung, lives in the billabong and eats the waterlily. Gaylene’s etching shows the rainbow from the snake all around, and the waterlily flower. The snake came out from the water, eating all the waterlilies. It is the totem for Galpu. Gaylene dances and paints the snake. Location: Nambarra Arts, Nhulunbuy (NT)

The two bawang (wild yam) represent a Yolngu and tell a story about a cloud that comes in and brings people together.  The cross-hatching tells a story from the Djapu, Rirratjingu, Galpu and Djambarrpuyngu clans. There are four places represented in the etching: Rarrakala, the red cliff at Yirrkala, Rarrowuy and Ngapinya.

Brenda says that her print shows all different clan areas. The dots are the people walking in different areas looking for mussels in the mangroves. Brenda lives at Milikapiti, Melville Island, and works with the Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association.

The yam is bush tucker dug out from the ground.  In the centre is the flower.  Around the yam are the stars, which everyone sees at night. Tommy remembers the stories told by the old people about the names of stars like the seven sisters and one star over the other side is following all those girls.  Tommy is from Fitzroy Crossing.

Lorraine's print is inspired by going out into the bush with the women at Garma. They were walking and digging for roots like yams. She says everything she has seen, all the things she has been picking up around Garma have been little links.  In 2003 Lorraine was undertaking her Masters in Fine Art and usually works as an abstract painter. She is from Western Australia.

Michael has used water as a common theme crossing cultures.  He was born in Aotearoa and has links to Tahiti and Samoa and the title reflects the three different words for water in Maori, Samoan and Yolngu.  He says when it rains it is seen as a blessing. Michael was brought to Garma by the Australia Council and hopes to return to Garma next year bringing back with him more people from Aotearoa to collaborate on a music project.
