Gary says he went out the day before to look around at the country and his print is inspired by what he saw. The print is all about the land and his interpretation of what he saw at Garma. He saw beautiful water, rock faces and layers within the rock faces. He says he became fascinated with the thought of being part of the land and that all his work, in one way or another, incorporates the land.
Gary was in his third year at VCA when he made this etching. Gary says he likes to blend European techniques with traditional aspects of his personality - things that have been passed down to him from his family, especially his uncle. He says it was an honour to be allowed to visit north east Arnhem Land. His people are from the Western District – the Gunditjmara people. He also has links to east Gippsland and the Gumi people.
