Lenore Dembski

Lenore is a Kungarakan woman. She usually draws and works with fabrics, and this is her first etching. She wanted to do something significant for her first one.

Lenore’s Aboriginal name is Lanyook. Her etching is a representation of the place where Lanyook comes from, near Berry Springs.  Lanyook comes from in between the deep holes.  One side of the work shows the fast water meandering over rocks, but it is not white water there.  It is between a half a metre and 4 metres wide.  On the other side are the deeper parts of the water, quite still.  There are water lilies and deep pools and that’s the place where the rainbow serpent appears. The paperbark by the water represents Kungarakan people, who are paperbark spirit people.

Lenore is from Darwin.
